The Texas Speed B.F.D. Chop Monster L83 V2 Camshaft is the loudest grind Texas Speed offers for the GM Gen V 5.3L L83. It was specced with Zac Mertens of Hoonigan, known as the Chop King, with one goal: the most savage idle a naturally aspirated L83 can produce while still making strong power through the whole curve. The cam is ground on a 110 degree lobe separation angle with 224/236 duration at .050" and .610" lift, and it carries a 10 percent larger fuel lobe for the direct-injection pump.
Texas Speed rates the chop as very aggressive and lists an operating range of 2,000 to 6,500 rpm with an estimated gain of 60 or more horsepower. A 3,000 rpm or higher stall converter is required, along with the TSP/PAC .660" dual LT valve spring kit or Manton conical springs and TSP hardened chromoly pushrods. The cam does not retain AFM/DOD, so a DOD/AFM delete kit is needed, the VVT phaser must be locked out, and a custom tune is required after installation. Texas Speed says it can still be daily driven with the right converter and tuning.

FAQ
What engine does the Texas Speed B.F.D. Chop Monster L83 V2 cam fit?
Texas Speed lists the B.F.D. Chop Monster L83 V2 for the naturally aspirated GM Gen V 5.3L L83 used in 2014 and later Silverado and Sierra 1500 and 2015 and later Tahoe, Suburban and Yukon. TSP's fitment filter also lists the later L84 and L82 5.3L engines.
How aggressive is the idle on the BFD Chop Monster cam?
Very aggressive. Texas Speed designed this 110 LSA grind with Hoonigan's Zac Mertens to deliver the most savage chop possible from a naturally aspirated L83, and rates its chop level as very aggressive.
Do I need a stall converter with the B.F.D. Chop Monster L83 cam?
Yes. Texas Speed requires an aftermarket torque converter with a 3,000 rpm or higher stall for this camshaft. With the correct converter and tuning, Texas Speed says the truck can still be daily driven.
What valve springs and pushrods does the BFD L83 V2 cam require?
Upgraded springs are required. Texas Speed specifies the TSP/PAC .660" dual LT valve spring kit with titanium retainers or Manton conical valve springs, and recommends TSP hardened chromoly pushrods with this camshaft.
Is a DOD delete or phaser lockout needed for this camshaft?
Both. The B.F.D. Chop Monster does not retain the factory AFM/DOD cylinder deactivation, so a DOD/AFM delete kit is required, and Texas Speed requires a VVT phaser lockout kit on all of its LT camshafts. A custom tune is required after installation.
How much power does the B.F.D. Chop Monster L83 cam add?
Texas Speed estimates a gain of 60 or more horsepower on a Gen V 5.3L L83 with the supporting parts in place, with an operating range of 2,000 to 6,500 rpm. Actual results depend on the rest of the combination and tuning.
