The Texas Speed 228R Camshaft is one of the most popular Texas Speed grinds, aimed at 5.7L and 6.0L LS engines that want strong power delivery while staying a great daily driver once tuned. It makes approximately 5 to 7 more horsepower than the 224R, and Texas Speed's dyno testing shows a solid 45 to 50 rear-wheel horsepower gain.

The cam measures 228/228 duration at .050", .600"/.600" lift and a 112 degree lobe separation angle across a 1,800 to 6,800 rpm operating range. Texas Speed recommends a 10.1:1 or higher compression ratio and PAC 1219 or TSP .660" dual valve springs. Because of its size, a 3,200 rpm or higher stall converter is recommended in automatic cars along with at least a 3.23 rear gear for maximum performance. The cam fits stock untouched heads with no piston-to-valve clearance issues, though measuring is always recommended. Tuning is required in both automatic and manual applications.

    FAQ

What engines does the Texas Speed 228R cam fit?

Texas Speed lists the 228R as best suited for 5.7L and 6.0L LS engines such as the LS1, LS6, LS2 and 6.0L truck engines. Texas Speed's fitment list also covers the 4.8L and 5.3L truck platforms of the same era.

How much power does the 228R camshaft add?

Texas Speed's dyno testing shows a solid 45 to 50 rear-wheel horsepower gain from the 228R, roughly 5 to 7 more horsepower than the 224R camshaft. Results vary with heads, intake, exhaust and tuning.

Do I need a stall converter and rear gear with the 228R?

Texas Speed recommends a 3,200 rpm or higher stall converter in automatic cars. A rear gear change is not required, but at least a 3.23 is recommended for automatics to get the most from the cam.

Will the 228R cam fit stock, untouched cylinder heads?

Yes. Texas Speed states the 228R fits stock untouched heads with no piston-to-valve clearance issues, although measuring clearance is always recommended during any cam installation.

Is the 228R a good daily driver camshaft?

Texas Speed describes the 228R as a very streetable cam that makes a great daily driver once properly tuned, with a choppy idle and a 1,800 to 6,800 rpm operating range. Tuning is required for both automatic and manual cars.
